Breeding Peonies

Peonies are one of the longest lived of our garden perennials. With the prospect of your creation outlasting you by hundreds of years creating a new peony and naming it for a loved one brings an incredible sense of joy and responsibility at the same time.

The American Peony Society is devoted to peonies and joining it can bring you in contact with many hybridizers that are very willing to share their knowledge. APS publications are full of detailed information on making crosses and growing the seedlings on to flowering. Here we have put together a group of peonies starting with the wild species that are known to be fertile and produce seed so that you can get to growing them right away without a lot of trial and error since some peonies will not produce seed.

Paeonia tenuifolia SOLD OUT  (wild species 1759)
This pixie-like single flowered wild fern-leaf peony is small enough to look right at home in a sunny rock garden. Much more dainty than the double flowered form at only 12” tall. It must have well drained soil and it will go dormant as early as August and should not be overwatered then. It is fertile and will produce seed so it can be used in hybridizing new plants or you can grow your own next generation of fern leaf peonies. The root structure is naturally small. Fertile Yellow Breeder Peony Lemon Chiffon

Peony Lemon Chiffon SOLD OUT  (Reath 1981)
Peony Lemon Chiffon is perhaps the most important double yellow hybid in existence because it is fertile as a pollen or seed parent and produces double offspring. The strong stems easily hold the large nearly double blooms upright on 32” stems. These are large blooming size divisions that should bloom next year – not tissue cultured plants. If you are breeding yellow peonies this plant is a cornerstone plant to get you ahead of the curve.

Some of the offspring seen from other breeders have been very impressive and we can hardly wait for our own first seedlings to bloom. Lemon Chiffon is the parent of the nearly impossible to find peony Pastelegance. Week 5 bloom date rating. Plant in full sun.

Paeonia arietina

Paeonia arietina SOLD OUT
This species is rarely found in part because of confusion as to it's true identity. For a long while it was listed as a sub-species of mascula but the root structure is entirely different than P. mascula being closer to P. officinalis with tuberous roots. The seed pods are also quite distinct compared to other closely related species. Some of the most beautiful rosy-pink 5” blooms are born on on plants 24” tall or taller. The color often being clearer pink than in P. officinallis there have been darker and lighter color forms mentioned in older peony literature. Early to bloom it has distinct foliage adding to it's interest. P. arietina requires excellent drainage and full sun to perform well. We do not recommend growing this species in heavy clay soil that may be water saturated at any time during the growing season. Quite fertile it can produce a lot of seed and will hybridize with other tetraploid peonies offering an rewarding way for you to expand your interest in growing peonies. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.
