Breeding Peonies

Peonies are one of the longest lived of our garden perennials. With the prospect of your creation outlasting you by hundreds of years creating a new peony and naming it for a loved one brings an incredible sense of joy and responsibility at the same time. The American Peony Society is devoted to peonies and joining it can bring you in contact with many hybridizers that are very willing to share their knowledge. APS publications are full of detailed information on making crosses and growing the seedlings on to flowering. Here we have put together a group of peonies starting with the wild species that are known to be fertile and produce seed so that you can get to growing them right away without a lot of trial and error since some peonies will not produce seed.

Peony Candy Stripe SOLD OUT  (R. Anderson 1992) Peony Candy Stripe is a striking combination of white and red streaks in a double form flower make this a focal point of the garden when in bloom or brought indoors as a cut flower. Generous amount of blooms on 30-36 inch stems may benefit from some support in the garden. It is also useful to the hybridizer as it provides both fertile pollen and seeds. Week 7 bloom date rating. Peony Charm ALM  (Franklin 1931) Peony Charm is a 2009 Award of Landscape Merit Winner! Very dark mahogany-red Japanese of lustrous satiny sheen with a center of yellow edged red petalodes on upright and vigorous 34" stems. Late season, fragrant. Peony Circus Circus  (Klehm 1995) Peony Circus-Circus This cheerful striped red and white peony varies from single to semi-double in form. The 4” blooms are held on 30” stems and there can be up to 4 side buds extending the bloom season. A wonderful addition to the unusual blooms used in flower arrangements. An added bonus is that it sets seed easily for those wishing to create their own new novelty peony variety. It has a mild fragrance. Week 5 bloom rating. Peony Color Magnet  (Hollingsworth 1994) Peony Color Magnet a single hybrid has bright red-violet cup shaped pink blooms. 34” tall with strong stems that hold the large flowers close to the bush. Dark green foliage. Some of the seedlings from this variety have had extremely attractive variegated foliage. Hybridizers may wish to work this trait into thier breeding program for foliage with season long interest. Week 5 bloom date rating. Peony Comanche ALM   (Bigger 1957) Peony Comanche American Peony Society Award of Landscape Merit Winner! These flowers have a brilliant color. Fragrant, vivid magenta guard petals and amber staminodes make this an outstanding Japanese lactiflora. Healthy dark green leaves on a vigorous plant make it a great choice for season long good looks in the garden. Midseason bloom on 36" tall stems. Plant in full sun. Peony Dawn Glow   (Saunders/Hollingsworth 1986) Peony Dawn Glow is an ivory petaled single hybrid with soft pink overtones. The flower is fragrant and bloom season is early. Peony Dearest   (Pehrson/Hollingsworth 1992) Peony Dearest is a single pink hybrid, fertile tetraploid, greenish cream white petals edged and veined cool, sharp pink, stigmas and filaments pink, a new unique pattern for peonies, very early and very strong 34" stems. Useful for further hybridizing, fertile both ways. Dawn Glow is one of it's parents. The glossy reflective surface of the petals is a unique feature of this flower. Peony Dunlora   (Peyton 1943) Peony Dunlora has single white flowers held neatly above leaves as though trimmed to 27" tall. It is this neat plant habit that sets it apart from other white single peonies. Early, one of the first singles to open. A rare historical find, this plant was the namesake of Mr. Peyton's peony enterprise. It was aquired from Bob Tischler who had received it from the Brand Peony Collection. Week 5 bloom date rating. Peony Early Glow  (Hollingsworth 1989) Peony Early Glow A single hybrid with buff ivory petals and side buds to prolong the bloom season. 30” stems. Peony Gardenia   (Lins 1954) Peony Gardenia, loveliest large gardenia formed double blush white peony on strong 34" stems. Dark green leaves. Peony Gay Paree   (Auten 1933) Peony Gay Paree is outstanding, fragrant, vigorous, distinct cerise pink guard petals with a white rose flushed anemone center, dainty in effect. Dramatic contrast for your peony collection. Late-midseason on 40" stems. If you remove the side buds while they are pea-sized you will have a very beautiful much larger bloom. Leave the side buds on if you prefer an extended bloom season, but you should try to see how much larger the bloom gets by removing the sidebuds you'll be amazed. Plant in full sun. Peony Green Lotus   (Klehm 1995) Peony Green Lotus is a very unusual single lactiflora with green and white petals faintly tinted with pink, 29" tall, 4" flowers, very vigorous. It has produced fertile seed. When used as a cut flower it creates lots of comments as people can not figure what kind of flower it is with it’s unusual shape and coloration. Plant in full sun.
