Peonies Blooming Week 2 - Early

The early blooming peony flowers with a week 2 bloom rating are mostly single and semi-double flowered with strong stems and vibrant colors since most are hybrid peony types including the Saunders peony hybrids. They are found in colors from pure white, soft pastels, vibrant lipstick red, patterned flowers and even yellow peonies. Early blooming peonies have a wide range of plant sizes and foliage types from fern leaf peony hybrids with narrow foliage to robust large foliage from Paeonia macrophylla parentage.

Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii the rare wild yellow peony.

Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii (yellow form)  (wild species)
Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschiii is a very distinct peony species found growing in only one valley in the Caucasus mountains. This is the yellow flowered form that is so much sought after. This is like the holy grail for the serious peony species grower. The emerging foliage is bronze red in color and the blossoms occur very early in the peony bloom season. The foliage matures to a matte green color and often the leaves have red stems. These are divisions of our own stock plants and are not unproven seedlings. If you are not an experienced peony grower we do not recommend this rare plant. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia officinalis James Crawford Weguelin

Paeonia officinalis 'J. C. Wegulin'
This rare species valuable as a breeding plant grows to 32” tall and is early blooming with red flowers. The habit of the plant is more typical of P. peregrina or the rarer P. saueri, recently described which may prove to be its true species rather than a selection of P. officinalis. Very fertile and rewarding for those wishing to try hybridizing peonies. The photo shows a pink reflection from the bright sun when it was taken but the flower color is actually more red than seen here. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia tenuifolia flore plena Double Red Fernleaf Peony

Paeonia tenuifolia flore plena SOLD OUT  (ancient species 1836)
Double Fern Leaf Peony is scarlet, lipstick red and the earliest blooming of the double peonies. It must be grown in well drained soil in full all day sun. It can go dormant in early summer and should not be over watered at that time. Water from automatic sprinklers has been known to kill this plant so be sure and plant it where you can control the amount of water it will receive and cut back on watering once it starts to go dormant. Crowding by other plants or invading tree or shrub roots will also weaken and kill it. It is incredibly hardy when grown properly and is found growing in abandoned cemeteries in the open prairies which gives us a clue that it will thrive more easily in a fully exposed area with little extra care once established. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.
