Fragrant Peonies

Our top 12 most fragrant peonies include; Philomele, Moonstone, Alexander Fleming, Chestine Gowdy, the yellow flowered anemone form variety with a hint of sweet citrus is Laura Dessert, Kelways Glorious truely is glorious in form and fragrance, Myrtle Gentry is at the top of many womens lists as the most fragrant while men prefer the vibrant true red colors found in Red Charm and Diana Parks two fantastic hybrid doubles that are very fragrant. Rounding out the dozen are Madame Calot for the French Country Garden, Lady Alexandra Duff which is a beloved variety in English Gardens, and Hermione which I wish was in bloom all year long.

Many peonies with French sounding names like Madame Calot are deliciously fragrant. They were selected as cut flower varieties for people who wanted them to be cut, brought indoors and enjoyed not just for their color but fragrance also.

Diana Parks  (Bockstoce 1942)
It was love at first sight when I saw this huge, fragrant, bomb shaped brilliant, glittering carmine red blooms with a hint of orange on this hybrid peony with 42" stems. Splendid texture and color. Very fragrant, late. I can’t imagine being without this wonderful double flowered hybrid. Make sure it is planted in an area with good drainage as with all peonies they do not like wet soggy soil.

Tall massive globular double white with red flares is one of the oldest and still one of the best very fragrant lactiflora whites. Midseason, 36". The healthy , dark green and large foliage is very distinctive. Needs staking to support the large blooms in the garden. As a cut flower it is still very beautiful. Plant in full sun and give it some support for the flowers in bloom. When out of bloom the dark gren foliage remains attractive in the garden.

Most single flowered form peonies do not have a nice fragrance because the pollen gives off what some describe as a bitter scent.

It is far less common to find a fragrant double red peony than say a fragrant double blush peony.

As you may guess not all people agree on which peonies are the most fragrant. My favorite fragrant peony? I hate to pick one but those at the top of my list would be Moonstone and Madame Calot for classic form, Laura Dessert and Philomele for rarity of form, and Myrtle Gentry for the most strongly fragrant in the garden.
