Peony Red Grace is a double deep red hybrid, ball form has tightly packed petals to almost form a complete globe, good substance and strong 36" stems. New 2013 Introduction Romantic Lace Peony

Peony Romantic Lace   (Tischler/Buchite 2013)

Peony Romantic Lace was registered and introduced in 2013. It is very fragrant compared to Myrtle Gentry which is recognized as one of the most fragrant peonies. That quality along with it's subtle pastel tones and delicate flower form add to it's appeal. The dark pink buds open to a lovely 5 1/2 inch Japanese form flower held a few inches above a dense compact plant with dark green, disease resistant foliage. The 10-12 lavender-pink guard petals have a silvery white cast to the edges as the flower matures and hold their cupped form as the bloom ages. The creamy, amber pink center staminodes are flattened and cupped with each finely laced edge highlighted by a bright gold accent when freshly opened. Three side buds extend the mid-season bloom. No pollen noted but we had a few seeds collected from our plants this fall. Very fragrant with the fragrance rich and pleasing. It has shown excellent bud and plant hardiness during extreme weather conditions during pre-bloom and bloom season. No loss of bloom or foliage damage during several severe springs making it a vigorous variety adapted to adverse weather. In 2013 after 10 inches of rain during peak bloom it was among only a handful of peonies still standing in the field along with Peony Ben Erickson.  Plant in full sun. Week 5 bloom date rating.

Pink Memorial Day Peony.

Paeonia officinalis rosea plena Pink Double Memorial Day Peony  (ancient cultivated species 1613)
This pink double flowered form of the Memorial Day Peony has exceptional color and form on compact plants which at maturity will be about 4 feet across. Found throughout Europe in the wake of old monasteries where they were cultivated in medicinal gardens for centuries this species still adorns our gardens today. For those seeking doubleness in their hybrid peonies this has been a successful fertile seed producer but requires that you help the process along by applying the pollen to the stigma as it is normally concealed from the bees by the many extra petals. Known to be tolerant of warm climates it is a good choice for those wanting to experiment in more southern locations where the regular garden peony is more challenging to grow. Week 3 bloom date rating.

Many times we are asked, what fragrant peonies do we grow? We had a list of our own and with a great deal of researching many peony books both old and new and asking our customers to let us know which they thought were notable fragrant peony varieties in their gardens we have put together the following offerings. Add a few fragrant peonies to your garden to increase your pleasure and relaxation.

Some of our favorite fragrant peonies include; Chestine Gowdy, Kansas, Myrtle Gentry and Noemie Demay. Myrtle Gentry is considered by many to be the most fragrant. Those who prefer a peony with a clear true red color can choose from Diana Parks or Henry Bockstoce two hybrid doubles that are very fragrant. Consider the Fragrant French Peony, Madame Calot for the French Country Garden, and Hermione which I wish was in bloom all year long.

Many antique varieties from France like, August Dessert, Mme de Verneville and Mme Emile Lemoine are deliciously fragrant. These peonies were selected as cut flower varieties for people who wanted them to be brought indoors and enjoyed not just for their color but fragrance also.

Don't limit yourself to the doubles but consider some of the unusual forms and color combinations of fragrant peonies like Bouquet Perfect and Pink Hawaiian Coral.

Sea Shell, an APS Gold Medal winner is noted for it's pleasant fragrance and is one of the few singles that make a great cut flower. It has also received the Award of Landscape Merit!

As you may guess not all people agree on which peonies are the most fragrant. My favorite fragrant peony? I hate to pick one but those at the top of my list would be Myrtle Gentry and Romantic Lace for the most strongly fragrant in our garden.
