princessmarg2.jpg

Princess Margaret  (Marawska 1960)
Large full double dark pink has an open cup shape that sheds water fairly well allowing the plant to be more resistant to falling over in the garden after rain. When cut and used in a vase it has a most pleasant fragrance which makes it a very popular flower. It blooms early to midseason on 30" stems.

Raspberry Sundae  (Klehm 1968)
Double bomb soft raspberry and white blend, blooms early mid season, sweet fragrance. With 36" tall stems it is great for cutting. I would advise staking it in a garden setting as the generous blooms stress the strength of the stems.

A. B. Franklin SOLD OUT  (Franklin 1928)
A.B. Franklin is a late blooming peony. This large, double blush peony is fragrant. When the flower first opens it is a bright blush pink and then changes to a white, very lovely flower of beautiful form. Developed by Mr. Franklin in Minnesota. Although the 31” stems are strong they should be given some support because of the large blooms. APS Gold Medal Winner! Plant in full sun.

BessBockstoce.jpg

Bess Bockstoce SOLD OUT  (Bockstoce 1955)
Early blooming, incredibly fragrant bright pink hybrid is quite rare. Hard to find the real thing as many times Rose Heart a related plant was often sold as Bess Bockstoce. The fully double flowers of Bess Bockstoce are held on strong 32" stems that require no staking in the garden. A well drained soil in a sunny garden location is best for this variety. This is the real thing, a clear pink flower throughout it’s bloom, so those who have been nudging me to release some now is your chance. Delightfully fragrant like roses. When our supply is sold out that will be it for another 4 years until we rebuild stock.

Majestic Rose peony is a fragrant, very large flat double rose pink bloom with outer petals that reflex. It is a late bloom season selection with strong stems that naturally because of the large blooms should be supported none-the-less. Plant in full sun. Please note that demand is always very strong for this variety when offered.

Many times we are asked, what fragrant peonies do we grow? We had a list of our own and with a great deal of researching many peony books both old and new and asking our customers to let us know which they thought were notable fragrant peony varieties in their gardens we have put together the following offerings. Add a few fragrant peonies to your garden to increase your pleasure and relaxation.

Some of our favorite fragrant peonies include; Philomele, Moonstone, Alexander Fleming, Chestine Gowdy, and Laura Dessert. Myrtle Gentry is considered by many to be the most fragrant. Those who prefer a peony with a clear true red color can choose from Diana Parks or Henry Bockstoce two fantastic hybrid doubles that are very fragrant. Consider the Fragrant French Peony, Madame Calot for the French Country Garden, Lady Alexandra Duff which is a beloved variety in English Gardens, and Hermione which I wish was in bloom all year long.

Many antique varieties from France like, August Dessert, Mme de Verneville and Mme Emile Lemoine are deliciously fragrant. These peonies were selected as cut flower varieties for people who wanted them to be brought indoors and enjoyed not just for their color but fragrance also.

Don't limit yourself to the doubles but consider some of the unusual forms and color combinations of fragrant peonies like Butter Bowl and Pink Hawaiian Coral.

Sea Shell, an APS Gold Medal winner is noted for it's pleasant fragrance and is one of the few singles that make a great cut flower. It also received the Award of Landscape Merit for 2009!

As you may guess not all people agree on which peonies are the most fragrant. My favorite fragrant peony? I hate to pick one but those at the top of my list would be Moonstone and Madame Calot for classic form, Laura Dessert and Philomele for rarity of colors and form, and Myrtle Gentry for the most strongly fragrant in our garden.
