Late Blooming Peonies Week 6

Selecting late blooming peonies for the northern gardener extends the peony season out until the other garden perennials take over in late June. Many late blooming peonies are fragrant. While the color selection tends more towards the pinks and whites there are some deep colored red Japanese forms worth including for their color contrast and interesting flower forms. Generally speaking peony growers in the southern growing zones 7B and 8 should not be selecting from this group unless they are of the Japanese form.

Peony Victoire de la Marne

Peony Victoire de la Marne SOLD OUT  (Dessert 1915)
Peony Victoire de la Marne Much preferred in Europe by florists this floriferous double purple red has very large flowers with good stems and foliage. When I first saw this I fell in love with it and others have appreciated it too as it often ends up on order lists so that we try to keep enough on hand to divide every few years. We have only a moderate supply this season.
