Rare and Limited Edition Peonies
| Peonies listed on our Rare and Limited Edition pages are available in short supply. Most of these peony varieties are only found at specialty peony growers like Hidden Springs Flower Farm and bring something unique to your perennial garden.
Each year about 75% of the peonies we list on the limited edition pages are not available the following season as they shift to our propagation fields to spend three to four years time growing in size before they can be harvested again. Don't miss out on several seasons of enjoying these peonies in your garden by waiting until they are sold out. |

Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii (yellow form) SOLD OUT (wild species)
Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschiii is a very distinct peony species found growing in only one valley in the Caucasus mountains that has a yellow flowered form that is much sought after. This is like the holy grail for the serious peony species grower. The emerging foliage is bronze red in color and the blossoms occur very early in the peony bloom season. The foliage matures to a matte green color and often the leaves have red stems. These are divisions of our own stock plants and are not unproven seedlings. If you are not an experienced peony grower we do not recommend this rare plant. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii (pink form) SOLD OUT (wild species)
This Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii was also grown from wild collected seed. Botanists have determined that the yellow, pink and picotee forms of this species grow side by side in the wild. It has the same plant habit and emerges exactly at the same time as its yellow and picotee colored flower forms. These are mature divisions we sell. The seedlings produced from these plants have consistently been pink flowered and when a purposful crossing was made with the yellow form some very attractive muticolored blooms have resulted like the picotee color form supporting the theory that P.mlokosewitschii grows as several color forms in the one valley it is native to. Good seed production on these plants also. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii (picotee form) (lagodechiana) SOLD OUT (wild species)
These Paeonia daurica mlokosewitschii (picotee color form which was called P. lagodechiana) plants were grown from wild collected seed where the species of P. mlokosewitschii grows in several color forms side by side with the yellow and pink form of the species. Hong's new publication lists all the color forms as P. daurica subspecies mlokosewitschii but they are kept separate as color forms for gardeners and plant breeders. It is just a beautiful looking plant blooming very early on small compact plants.
These are mature divisions from our stock plants, not seedlings. 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia daurica coriifolia (caucasica) SOLD OUT (wild species)
We grew these from wild collected seed from the Republic of Georgia and the plants have some of the most beautiful emerging foliage followed by extremely early blooms even before the fern-leaf peony which most people think of as the first peony to bloom. Often the flower buds can have snow on them because they emerge so early in the season. Not huge plants they grow to about 24 tall and slightly wider. Mature divisions 2-3 eyes.

Paeonia tenuifolia SOLD OUT (wild species 1759)
This pixie-like single flowered wild fern-leaf peony is small enough to look right at home in a sunny rock garden. Much more dainty than the double flowered form at only 12 tall. It must have well drained soil and it will go dormant as early as August and should not be overwatered then. It is fertile and will produce seed so it can be used in hybridizing new plants or you can grow your own next generation of fern leaf peonies. The root structure is naturally small. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia peregrina SOLD OUT (wild species 1807)
This species was the parent of many of Dr. Saunders' hybrid peonies. Single vibrant red cupped flower with glossy deep green foliage. This is my favorite of all the peony species. 20 Tall. Brilliant tomato red color. Our original stock came from seed from Romania and a German peony grower and stops people in their tracks when it is in bloom. Soil with good drainange and a location in full sun are recommended. A rewarding parent of beautiful hybrid seedlings. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.

Paeonia officinalis rosea plena SOLD OUT (ancient cultivated species 1613)
This pink double flowered form of the Memorial Day peony has exceptional color and form on compact plants which at maturity will be about 4 feet across. Found throughout Europe in the wake of old monasteries where they were cultivated in medicinal gardens for centuries this species still adorns our gardens today. For those seeking doubleness in their hybrid peonies this has been a successful fertile seed producer but requires that you help the process along by applying the pollen to the stigma as it is normally concealed from the bees by the many extra petals. Known to be tolerant of warm climates it is a good choice for those wanting to experiment in more southern locations where the regular garden peony is more challenging to grow.

Paeonia tenuifolia flore plena SOLD OUT (ancient species 1836)
Double Fern Leaf Peony is scarlet, lipstick red and the earliest blooming of the double peonies. It must be grown in well drained soil in full all day sun. It can go dormant in early summer and should not be over watered at that time. Water from automatic sprinklers has been known to kill this plant so be sure and plant it where you can control the amount of water it will receive and cut back on watering once it starts to go dormant. Crowding by other plants or invading tree or shrub roots will also weaken and kill it. It is incredibly hardy when grown properly and is found growing in abandoned cemeteries in the open prairies which gives us a clue that it will thrive more easily in a fully exposed area with little extra care once established. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.
