Peonies Blooming Week 4 - Midseason

Week 4 Midseason blooming peonies are dominated by the colorful hybrid peonies that will amaze you with their brilliant true red to pastel colored blooms. Included are the double form hybrids many of which are fragrant favorites of the hybrid peonies. The possibilities are huge for color and flower form selection since hybrid singles, semi-doubles and full doubles are all blooming during this week in the peony garden. A week ahead of the older common garden peonies. Be sure to include some in your garden and stretch your color palete and bloom season.

Paeonia officinalis rosea plena  (ancient cultivated species 1613) This pink double flowered form of the Memorial Day peony has exceptional color and form on compact plants which at maturity will be about 4 feet across. Found throughout Europe in the wake of old monasteries where they were cultivated in medicinal gardens for centuries this species still adorns our gardens today. For those seeking doubleness in their hybrid peonies this has been a successful fertile seed producer but requires that you help the process along by applying the pollen to the stigma as it is normally concealed from the bees by the many extra petals. Paeonia officinalis rubra plena   (ancient species known since 1581) The Red Memorial Day Peony of intense brilliant crimson red color cultivated for centuries in Europe is a true antique of great garden value yet today. Paeonia peregrina 'Sunshine'   (selected form of species) This is a selected clone of the species used successfully to create salmon, coral, flamingo or cherry colored hybrids. 20” Easy to please its bright red cup shaped flowers and deep green leaves are a perfect compliment to one another. Peony Alexander Woollcott   (Saunders 1941) Peony Alexander Woollcott an early blooming hybrid has a semi-double glossy, crimson red flower that is a bright cardinal red. The flowers are held on 24 - 30" stems with dark glossy green foliage and hold the cup shaped flowers upright. The vivid color does not fade until petal fall. A cross between Marie Jacquin and P. peregrina (lobata)it is one of the famous hybrids of Dr. Saunders. The garden display created when in bloom is incredible.
