Tischler Peonies

Robert Tischler of Faribault, Minnesota introduced some of the finest peonies developed in the Mid-west. A small family operation similar to Hidden Springs Flower Farm he sold his introductions through the mail and locally with the attraction of an annual cut flower show where you could order roots for the fall. We continue this tradition at Hidden Springs Flower Farm with our annual cut flower show every June.

Some of his later introductions like Paul Friesen are nearly unknown in the peony growing world, while others like the Gold Medal winner Myra MacRae has enjoyed a wider distribution. Discover some of his wonderful creations like his namesake Bob and the one he named for his wife Addie and those named for many other family members, relatives, hunting pals and yes even his hunting dogs!

Hidden Springs Flower Farm received their stock directly from Bob Tischler when he retired from growing peonies along with a number of his advanced seedlings one which became named Romantic Lace, a very fragrant new variety gaining popularity around the world.

Rare Tischler Double White Peony Roberta Erickson

Peony Roberta Erickson SOLD OUT  (Tischler 1995)

It is a fragrant, ivory white double with blooms that are 6 - 8" across in size and flowers midseason. Flower form is flat and opens easily. Strong 32 -34" stems with medium green foliage. Bob told me that the flat flower form stood up better after a rain because the water could drain through the petals like a sieve rather than fill up like a bowl for some of the tightly packed double forms. This was Bob Tischler’s seedling number #307.

New 2013 Introduction Romantic Lace Peony

Peony Romantic Lace VERY FRAGRANT! SOLD OUT  (Tischler/Buchite 2013)

Peony Romantic Lace was registered and introduced in 2013. It is very fragrant compared to Myrtle Gentry which is recognized as one of the most fragrant peonies. That quality along with it's subtle pastel tones and delicate flower form add to it's appeal. The dark pink buds open to a lovely 5 1/2 inch Japanese form flower held a few inches above a dense compact plant with dark green, disease resistant foliage. The 10-12 lavender-pink guard petals have a silvery white cast to the edges as the flower matures and hold their cupped form as the bloom ages. The creamy, amber pink center staminodes are flattened and cupped with each finely laced edge highlighted by a bright gold accent when freshly opened. Three side buds extend the mid-season bloom. No pollen noted but we had a few seeds collected from our plants this fall. Very fragrant with the fragrance rich and pleasing. It has shown excellent bud and plant hardiness during extreme weather conditions during pre-bloom and bloom season. No loss of bloom or foliage damage during several severe springs making it a vigorous variety adapted to adverse weather. In 2013 after 10 inches of rain during peak bloom it was among only a handful of peonies still standing in the field along with Peony Ben Erickson. Plant in full sun. Week 5 bloom date rating.
