Peonies Blooming Week 1 - Very Early

This group of peonies with a bloom date rating of week 1 includes some rare and often overlooked species and hybrid peonies. What a shame since they begin to bloom right along with late flowering tulips and flowering crab apple trees creating a wonderful garden scene. The very early blooming peonies are in flower three to four weeks ahead of the common garden peony. When you include some of them in your garden you can have 3 extra weeks of bloom.

Paeonia tenuifolia Wild Fern Leaf Peony

Paeonia tenuifolia Sold out  (wild species 1759)
This pixie-like single flowered wild fern-leaf peony is small enough to look right at home in a sunny rock garden. Much more dainty than the double flowered form at only 12” tall. It must have well drained soil and it will go dormant as early as August and should not be overwatered then. It is fertile and will produce seed so it can be used in hybridizing new plants or you can grow your own next generation of fern leaf peonies. The root structure is naturally small. Mature 2-3 eye divisions.
